Introduction to my Blog

Welcome!

I have successfully completed third year and I am going into fourth, majoring in English and minoring in French. My ultimate goal is to apply to teachers college and become an elementary school French teacher; and if not then I plan to move to France and see where life takes me after that.

I was introduced to blogging last September when I was enrolled in a life writing course and I have to say the thought of people reading what I have to say was a daunting task… to say the least. Safe to say I am not the most open person or one willing to express my thoughts and feelings to a world of strangers… however the course did not turn out half as bad as I imagined and I actually quite enjoyed reading other people’s thoughts (after I ignored the fact people were reading mine).

I am very passionate about helping people and creating a better future for young children and teens. For this reason I chose my topic to focus on mental illness. Unfortunately this past year I lost a cousin to suicide which of course only fueled my passion to help those who are suffering and in need of support. Support that is either not out there, hidden, or those needing it most are too afraid and ashamed to seek and ask for help. I have also witnessed firsthand the affects that mental illness has not only on the student in particular but the teacher and the other students within the classroom. I strongly believe that if more support is offered to students that this growing issue can be helped and ease the pain of students. I strongly feel that most schools are not equipped to deal with these issues, but I am hopeful that support and help is slowing making their way into schools and classrooms. Since mental illness is such a broad category, I am going to break it down to discuss small categories that affect students such as anxiety, depression and stress. Throughout the blog I will most likely touch on other mental illness’ that are issues within schools. Through this blog I not only want to help others but myself through researching ways that can help teachers, parents and students cope with mental illness.
